Bowers & Jones has welcomed six school students on a tour of its manufacturing facility to give them an insight into engineering.

The students, all aged between 13 and 16 years old, visited the manufacturing specialist in Bilston in May from City United Academy in Birmingham.

Operations director James Owen showed them different machinery in operation and provided an insight into careers in engineering and manufacturing and the opportunities they can provide.

Teacher Dylan Jackson from City United Academy, who accompanied the students on the tour, said: “We are very grateful to Bowers & Jones for showing us around their manufacturing facility.

“The tour was a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to see manufacturing processes up close and firsthand and find out more about engineering.

“Learning about different job opportunities and career paths is an important part of their education, and they found their visit very engaging and inspiring.”

Operations director James Owen added: “We really enjoyed showing the students around and answering their insightful questions.

“As a business it is important to us that we play our role in supporting local schools and community groups and inspiring the next generation to work in engineering and manufacturing.

“We are proud to be able to offer tours, work experience and apprenticeship opportunities to young people.”

Established in 1955, Bowers & Jones has grown to become a world leader in roll tooling and rolling mill products, with its technology now expanding into non-steel applications including electrical conduction and heating cable.

In May the company was awarded the highly prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category, recognising its significant growth in exports, with 80% of sales now coming from international markets.

Bowers & Jones also won the Export Business of the Year award at the Insider Media Made in the Midlands Awards and the Manufacturing & Engineering award at last year’s Black Country Chamber of Commerce Awards.

The company is up for the Small Business of the Year prize at the upcoming Express & Star Business Awards 2025, which will celebrate business success stories across the Black Country and Staffordshire on June 5.
